Wax palm (English spelling) carnauba

Japanese: ロウヤシ（英語表記）carnauba

A tall tree of the palm family famous for producing wax, also known as the Brazilian wax palm. The trunk grows to a height of 10-13m, with a slightly swollen base. The leaves are palmately circular, deeply lobed, 1-1.5m in diameter, and have about 60 lobes that are linear lanceolate with pointed tips. The petiole is long, and the leaf surface is covered with white wax. The spadix is about 2m long, branches upright, and produces many small flowers. The flowers are monoecious and bisexual. The fruit is ovoid, about 2.5cm in diameter, and ripens to a brown color.

蠟を生産することで有名なヤシ科の高木で，ブラジルロウヤシBrazilian wax palmともいう。幹は高さ10～13mとなり，基部はややふくれる。葉は掌状円形，径1～1.5mで深裂する。裂片は60個ぐらい，線状披針形で先端はとがる。葉柄は長く，葉の表面は白色の蠟でおおわれている。肉穂花序は長さ約2m，直立分岐し，多数の小さい花をつける。花は雌雄同株，両性花。果実は卵形，径約2.5cmで褐色に熟す。
