(1674-1730) His childhood name was Koshiro. He is said to have been born in Omigawa, Shimousa Province (Chiba Prefecture). In 1716 (Kyoho 1), he changed his name to Koshiro. He excelled in real-life, rough, and martial arts plays, and was praised as a great actor on a par with the second Ichikawa Danjūrō.

IV

(1737-1802) Born in Kyoto. He started out as a courtesan, then as a young man's actor, and then as a leading actor. He went down to Edo and became a disciple of Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​IV, and in 1772 (An'ei 1) he took on the stage name of Koshiro IV. A great actor with a passion for his art, he was ranked as the highest rank of Gokujō Jōkichi in 1794. He excelled in both wagoto and jitsuji roles as a courtesan, but in his later years he also played villainous roles. Some of his best roles were played by Soga Jūrō, Fujiya Izaemon, Obiya Chōemon, and Kudō Suketsune.

(1764-1838) son of the 4th. He progressed from leading roles to villain roles, and in 1801 (Kyowa 1) he assumed the stage name of the 5th Ichikawa, from his previous name of the 3rd Ichikawa Komazo. With a striking appearance and a fitting character for a villain role, he was a popular and renowned actor who was commonly referred to as "Hanataka Koshiro." With his realistic style of acting, he opened up new possibilities in the acting of the 4th Tsuruya Namboku's Kizewa (life-career) roles, and played an active role as a leading figure in the Edo theatrical world during the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-1830). His best roles include Nikki Danjo, Takechi Mitsuhide, Takano Moronao, Matsuomaru, Naosuke Gonbei, and Taheiji of Tateba.

(1812-1849) The eldest son of the 5th generation. In 1844 (Koka 1), he succeeded the 6th generation, but did not see success.

7th

(1870-1949) He was adopted by Fujima Kan'emon II at a young age, and became a disciple of Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​IX. After Ichikawa Kintarō, Somegoro, and Kōryō VIII, he took the stage name of Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​VII in 1911 (Meiji 44). He was excellent in looks and tone, and excelled in period, mannerism, and behavior. He inherited the artistic lineage of Shidanjūrō ​​and excelled in realism. He was a leading figure in the Taisho and Showa theatrical circles, and excelled in many roles played by leading actors in classical zagashira roles, such as Yuranosuke, Matsuōmaru, Banzui Chobei, and Takechi Mitsuhide. His most famous role is Benkei in "Kanjinchō," which he performed more than 1,600 times in his lifetime. The 11th Ichikawa Danjūrō, the 1st Matsumoto Hakuō (8th Koshiro), and the 2nd Onoe Shouroku were his children. He has written a famous book about his art called "Matsu no Midori."

(1910-1982) The second son of the 7th generation. His real name was Fujima Junjiro. He studied under the first Nakamura Kichiemon and later became his son-in-law. In 1949 (Showa 24), he took the stage name of the 8th generation Ichikawa Somegoro from the 5th. He was skilled in the period pieces inherited from Kichiemon and established a solid style of performance. In 1981, he handed over the stage name to his eldest son and took the name of the first Hakuō. In 1975, he was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property, and in 1976, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy. In 1981, he was awarded the Order of Culture.

(1942-) Eldest son of the 8th generation. Real name Fujima Akiaki. In 1981 (Showa 56), he took the stage name of the 9th generation Ichikawa Somegoro from the 6th generation Ichikawa Somegoro. Since his days as Somegoro, he has been famous for musicals such as "The King and I" and "Man of La Mancha", and has been active in a wide range of arts, appearing in translated plays such as "Oedipus Rex" and "Amadeus". In recent years, he has shown enthusiasm for Kabuki. In 2005 (Heisei 17), he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.

(1674―1730)幼名小四郎。下総(しもうさ)国(千葉県)小見川(おみがわ)の生まれと伝える。1716年(享保1)幸四郎と改名。実事(じつごと)、荒事(あらごと)、武道事(ぶどうごと)が得意で、2世市川団十郎と並ぶ名優とたたえられた。

4世

(1737―1802)京都生まれ。色子から若衆方(わかしゅがた)、さらに立役(たちやく)に転じた。江戸に下って4世市川団十郎の門弟となり、1772年(安永1)4世幸四郎を襲名。芸熱心な名優で、1794年には極上上吉の最高位に位置づけられた。色立役で和事(わごと)、実事に本領があったが、晩年は実悪(じつあく)も演じた。曽我(そが)十郎、藤屋伊左衛門、帯屋長右衛門、工藤祐経(すけつね)などが当り役だった。

5世

(1764―1838)4世の子。立役から実悪に進み、1801年(享和1)前名3世市川高麗蔵(こまぞう)から5世を襲名した。容貌魁偉(ようぼうかいい)で実悪役者にふさわしく、俗に「鼻高幸四郎」とよばれて人気の高かった名優である。写実的な芸風で、4世鶴屋南北(つるやなんぼく)の生世話(きぜわ)の演技に新生面を開き、文化・文政(ぶんかぶんせい)期(1804~1830)の江戸劇界の重鎮となって活躍した。仁木弾正(にっきだんじょう)、武智光秀(たけちみつひで)、高師直(こうのもろなお)、松王丸、直助権兵衛(なおすけごんべえ)、立場(たてば)の太平次(たへいじ)などが当り役。

7世

(1870―1949)幼年のころ2世藤間勘右衞門(ふじまかんえもん)の養子になり、9世市川団十郎の門に入る。市川金太郎・染五郎・8世高麗蔵を経て、1911年(明治44)7世を襲名。容姿・音調に優れ、時代、世話、所作事のいずれもよくした。師団十郎の芸脈を受け写実芸にも優れた。大正・昭和の劇壇の重鎮で、由良之助(ゆらのすけ)、松王丸、幡随長兵衛(ばんずいちょうべえ)、武智光秀など、古典の座頭(ざがしら)役の立役が勤める役に優れたものが多い。なかでも『勧進帳(かんじんちょう)』の弁慶はもっとも有名で、生涯に1600回余り演じた。11世市川団十郎、初世松本白鸚(はくおう)(8世幸四郎)、2世尾上松緑(おのえしょうろく)は、その子。芸談に『松のみどり』という名著がある。

(1910―1982)7世の次男。本名藤間順次郎。初世中村吉右衛門(きちえもん)に師事し、のちにその女婿(じょせい)となる。1949年(昭和24)5世市川染五郎から8世を襲名。吉右衛門譲りの時代物の型物によく、堅実な芸風を確立した。1981年名跡を長男に譲り、初世白鸚を名のる。1975年重要無形文化財、1976年芸術院会員。1981年文化勲章受章。

9世

(1942― )8世の長男。本名藤間昭曉。1981年(昭和56)、6世市川染五郎から9世を襲名。染五郎時代から『王様と私』『ラ・マンチャの男』ほかのミュージカルで有名になり、『オイディプス王』『アマデウス』ほかの翻訳劇に出演するなど、幅の広い芸で縦横の活躍をみせる。近年は歌舞伎に意欲をみせている。2005年(平成17)紫綬褒章(しじゅほうしょう)受章。

 2018年に2世白鸚を襲名。同時に長男7世市川染五郎(1973― )が10世松本幸四郎を、その長男金太郎(2005― )が8世市川染五郎を襲名した。
