Italian novelist. Born in Vico in central Italy. Studied literature at the University of Florence and attended the city's anti-fascist youth literary circle. He published a series of surrealist short stories, starting with "Dialogues of the Great System" (1937), followed by "Sea of Cockroaches" (1939) and "The Sword" (1942), and was regarded as one of the leading fantasy writers of the 20th century. Influenced by Poe, Gogol, and Kafka, he excelled at using paradoxes and black humor to surprise his readers, but at the heart of his works lies a deep pessimism towards life. He was also a well-known scholar of German and Russian literature, and was known for his eccentric behavior, such as frequenting casinos. His representative works include "Moonstones" (1939), "Shadows" (1954), and "Randomly" (1975).
