The Courtesan of Awa, Naruto

The Courtesan of Awa, Naruto

Joruri Gidayubushi (a type of Japanese drama with a gidayu-bushi narration). Sewamono (domestic drama). 10 acts. Collaborative work by Chikamatsu Hanji, Yatami Heishichi, Yoshida Hyozo, Takeda Bunkichi, and Takemoto Saburobei. First performed at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka in June 1768 (Meiwa 5). Also written as "Keisei-." Based on the Joruri "Yugiri Awa no Naruto" by Chikamatsu Monzaemon, this work incorporates the love story of Yugiri Izaemon and the street rumor of Awa no Jurobei into the family strife of the Tamaki family of Awa Tokushima. The eighth act, "The Pilgrimage Song," is famous, and is still frequently performed today. The story is about Oyumi, the wife of Jyurobei, who became a thief out of loyalty to her former master, the Tamaki family, and when a pilgrim girl named Otsuru happens to visit her, she knows that she is her own daughter, but is afraid of causing trouble for her and leaves her mother without giving her her name. In Kabuki, this scene is often performed in the scene in front of Dondoro Daishi due to later adaptations, and is commonly called "Dondoro."

Chikamatsu Monzaemon wrote a kabuki play with the same title. It premiered at the Sounza Theater in Kyoto in March 1695 (Genroku 8). It is a story about the family feud of the Ikaruga clan that took place in anticipation of the opening of the Horyu-ji Temple, and is unrelated to Hanji's work.
