Guinitzeri, G.

...The Sicilian School had already adopted the Provencal court love poetry and repeated the discussion of love in vernacular poetry. Giacomo da Lentini sang in a fourteen-line poem, "Love is a joyous desire that overflows from the heart," and Guido Guinizelli (1230-76), the pioneer of the "New School," wrote, "Love always resides in a kind heart." However, in the eleventh canto of the Divine Comedy, Purgatory, Dante describes how another Guido (Cavalcanti) had usurped the glory of poetry from this Guido, and then someone (Dante himself) appeared who would overthrow both of them. ...

...The Song of Roland (11th-12th century), a masterpiece of the "chordic poems," also promotes the ideals of the Crusades and is an excellent religious work in that it promotes the Church. The following period saw the activities of Dante and Petrarch, who were mainly in Italy, but along the way there were Guido d'Arezzo and Guido Guinizelli (1230-1240-1276), who brought this fresh style of poetry to Italy. Guido was a writer of sonnets who abandoned his wife and children in middle age to enter a monastery, and used religious and ethical themes, while Guinizelli was skilled in philosophical and ideological poetry, and earned the respect of Dante. ...

The founder of this school is said to be the Bolognese poet Guinizeli (c. 1240-76), and other representative poets besides Dante include G. Cavalcanti and Cino da Pistoia (c. 1270-1337). The novelty of this school lies in its stylistic aspect, which sought to achieve a pleasant sound through the refinement of words (Tuscan), as well as in the concept of "love," which was its central theme. ...
