Family novel - katei shosetsu

A literary term. In Japanese literary history, this refers to novels based on family life that emerged in the 1890s as a reaction to tragic and idealistic novels. Also known as illuminating novels, these have a pattern in which the protagonist is a woman who is tormented by the contradictions of feudal family relationships, and who finds solutions to her problems through the teachings of Christianity or Confucianism, or pure love. For this reason, although the contradictions within the family are depicted, there is little effort to expose them or thoroughly confront and investigate them, and many of these end up with easy conclusions and common-sense, popular solutions. Representative works include Tokutomi Roka's "Hototogisu" (1898-99), Kikuchi Yuho's "My Sins" (1899-1900), Nakamura Shun'u's "Fig Flowers" (1902), Kusamura Hokusei's "Hamako" (1902), and Taguchi Kikutei's "The Countess" (1905).

文芸用語。日本の文学史上で明治30年代に悲惨小説、観念小説の反動として出てきた家庭生活を素材にした小説をいう。一名、光明小説ともいい、封建的な家庭関係の矛盾に苦しむ女性を主人公とし、彼女がキリスト教や儒教の教え、または純粋な愛情によって問題の解決を得るというのがパターンになっている。それだけに、そこには家庭内の矛盾はいちおう描き出されるが、それを暴き、徹底的に対決究明する姿勢に乏しく、安易な結末、常識的・通俗的解決に終わってしまうものが多かった。代表的作品に徳冨蘆花(とくとみろか)の『不如帰(ほととぎす)』（1898～99）、菊池幽芳(ゆうほう)の『己(おの)が罪』（1899～1900）、中村春雨(しゅんう)の『無果花(いちじく)』（1902）、草村北星(ほくせい)の『浜子』（1902）、田口掬汀(きくてい)の『伯爵夫人』（1905）などがある。
