Kurama

A district in Sakyo Ward, northeast of Kyoto City. Formerly known as Kurama Village. Located in the Kitayama Mountains, with little flat land, the area produces firewood, charcoal, and timber. It is the temple town of Kurama Temple, located on the middle slope of Mount Kurama (570 meters). Mount Kurama, covered with old cedars, is also known for the legends of Kurama Tengu and the training ground of Ushiwakamaru. The Eizan Electric Railway Kurama Line runs from Demachiyanagi to the temple town at the foot of the mountain, and there is a cable car from the mountain gate to the Tahoto Pagoda at the middle slope. The path from the main hall to Kibune Shrine, passing through the Mao-do Hall in the inner sanctuary, is a hiking course. Events include the bamboo-cutting ceremony on June 20th to predict the harvest, and the fire festival on October 22nd at Yuki Shrine, located near the foot of the mountain.

京都市北東部、左京区の一地区。旧鞍馬村。北山山地に位置し、平地に乏しく、薪炭(しんたん)、木材を産す。鞍馬山（570メートル）の中腹にある鞍馬寺の門前町。老杉に覆われる鞍馬山は鞍馬天狗(てんぐ)や牛若丸修業の地の伝説でも知られる。出町柳から山麓(さんろく)の門前町まで叡山(えいざん)電鉄鞍馬線が通じ、山門から中腹の多宝塔まではケーブルカーがある。本堂から奥の院の魔王堂などを経て、貴船(きぶね)神社へ至る道はハイキングコースとなっている。6月20日の農作物の豊凶を占う竹伐り会式(たけきりえしき)や山麓に近い由岐(ゆき)神社の10月22日の火祭の行事がある。
