Mitsushima [town] - Mitsushima

Japanese: 美津島[町] - みつしま
Mitsushima [town] - Mitsushima
An old town in central Tsushima, Shimoagata County, Nagasaki Prefecture. It occupies the coast of Aso Bay, connecting the Tsushima Strait and Korea Strait at Ofunakoshi in the east and Manzeki Seto in the west. The sunken coast, with its many access points, is one of the most scenic spots in the Iki-Tsushima Quasi-National Park. In ancient times, Kaneda Castle, a Korean-style mountain castle, was built here, and in the Middle Ages, there was the Oei Invasion. In the Edo Period, it was also known as a whaling base, and the Tsushima Incident occurred at the end of the Edo Period. The main settlement, Kechi, was the home base of the Abiru clan in the Middle Ages, and before World War II, it was the military capital of Tsushima Fortress, and Takeshiki was an important naval port. Pearl farming is thriving here. The Manzeki Bridge spans the Manzeki Seto, and Tsushima Airport is located to the west of Ofunakoshi. In March 2004, it merged with the towns of Izuhara and Toyotama in Shimogata County, Mine and Kamigata County, and Kamitsushima and Kamitsushima Town to form Tsushima City. Area: 120.06 km2 . Population: 8,619 (2003).
