Obiage - Obiage

Japanese:
Obiage - Obiage

A type of Japanese clothing accessory. It is used to tie the obi in a good shape. The fabric is soft and thin, not bulky, and easy to tie, such as rinzu or crepe, and in summer, ro or ro crepe is used. Plain dyeing or tie-dyeing is used, and the color and pattern should be decided considering the color coordination with the kimono and obi. The width is 20 to 25 centimeters, and the length is 1.4 to 1.5 meters. It was first used at the end of the Edo period, and its current shape began around 1871 (Meiji 4). Today, when the obi has transitioned from practical use to decorative use, when tying the obi, the fullness is adjusted with an obi pillow, the obiage is placed over it and tied in front, and the end is tucked into the obi. For girls and young women wearing formal wear or as a bride, the obiage is not knotted, but is made in a figure eight shape, with the end tucked between the obi, to give it a plump shape. For formal wear, Edozuma is plain white, while for mourning wear, plain white or black is used.
