Also called a parameter, it is used to express the main variable as a function. For example, on a plane, the equation of a line is Ax+By+C=0 (A≠0 or B≠0) in terms of x and y coordinates, but this can be expressed as x= _x0 +at,y= _y0 +bt (a≠0 or b≠0) with t as a parameter. Here, t is a variable that can take on any real value.

In addition, parameters are letters used to identify objects. They are usually used to identify each element in a set of similar objects. For example, the equation for a line, Ax+By+C=0, determines the line by specifying a set of values ​​A, B, and C. Therefore, A, B, and C are parameters for determining the line.

媒介変数ともいい、主たる変数を、その関数として表示するのに用いる。たとえば平面上で、直線の方程式は、xy座標に関してAx+By+C=0(A≠0またはB≠0)であるが、これを、tをパラメーターとして、x=x₀+at,y=y₀+bt(a≠0またはb≠0)として表す。tはここでは、すべての実数値をとる変数である。

　このほかに、対象物を識別するために用いる文字のことをパラメーターということがある。通常、同種類のものの集合において、各要素を特定するのに用いる。たとえば直線の式Ax+By+C=0はA、B、Cの値を一組特定すれば、これによって直線が決定される。したがって、A、B、Cは直線を決定するためのパラメーターである。
