Ugo Province - Ugo no Kuni

Japanese:
Ugo Province - Ugo no Kuni

The name of the province was newly established in 1868 (Meiji 1). On December 7 of the same year, by a proclamation from the Dajokan, the former Dewa Province was divided into two provinces, Uzen and Ugo, and this northern part of the province was named Ugo. The province borders Rikuzen Province (Miyagi Prefecture) and Rikuchūgoku Province (Iwate Prefecture) to the east, Mutsu Province (Aomori Prefecture) to the north, and the Sea of Japan to the west. The new government took this measure just after the Boshin War, and it is believed that this was partly a policy move to bring the Tohoku domains under strong government control after the war. Eight counties from Dewa Province, namely Akumi, Akita, Kawabe, Senboku, Ogachi, Yamamoto, Hiraka, and Yuri, were incorporated into Ugo Province. In 1871, Ugo Province was abolished due to the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, and Akumi District was incorporated into Yamagata Prefecture in the same year, and the other seven districts, together with Kazuno District in Rikuchu Province, became Akita Prefecture. Even today, the JR stations there use the name Ugo Honjo (Yurihonjo City), Ugo Sakai (Daisen City), and Ugo Ushijima (Akita City).
