〘Noun〙 An official outside the Imperial Court (Ryoge) . One of the standing military forces of the Imperial Court which was responsible for guarding the Imperial Palace grounds and providing security for imperial journeys. It was the Chuefu (Chuefu) , established in 728 (5th year of the Jinki era ) and renamed in 807 (2nd year of the Daido era ). From the mid-Heian period onwards it played the role of a ceremonial guard. Its staff included the chief general, as well as chusho (major generals), shogun (general inspectors), shoshou (sergeants ), doctors, bancho (chiefs), and fusei (official guards), as well as 400 imperial guards.
