The sixth king of ancient Rome. Date of birth and death unknown. Reigned 578?-535? BC. According to legend, he was the daughter of a Latin slave or princess, raised by Tarquinius Priscus, and succeeded to the throne after his death (though some say he was an Etruscan conqueror). He is said to have built the Temple of Diana, constructed the walls surrounding Rome, divided the city into four districts (tribus), and divided them into five classes (classes) and 193 centuries (centuries). The details of this legend are doubtful, but the core of it is accepted as historical fact. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
