Servius Tullius

The sixth king of ancient Rome. Date of birth and death unknown. Reigned 578?-535? BC. According to legend, he was the daughter of a Latin slave or princess, raised by Tarquinius Priscus, and succeeded to the throne after his death (though some say he was an Etruscan conqueror). He is said to have built the Temple of Diana, constructed the walls surrounding Rome, divided the city into four districts (tribus), and divided them into five classes (classes) and 193 centuries (centuries). The details of this legend are doubtful, but the core of it is accepted as historical fact.

古代ローマ6代目の王。生没年不詳。在位，前578？‐前535？年。伝承によればラテン系の女奴隷ないし王女の子で，タルクイニウス･プリスクスの下で養育され，その死後王位を継承した(ただしエトルリア出身の征服王と見る説もある)。彼はディアナ神殿を造営し，ローマ市の囲壁を建設し，都市を四つの区(トリブス)に区分し，5階層(クラシス)･193の百人組(ケントゥリア)に分属したと伝えられる。この伝承の詳細は疑わしいが，その中核は史実と認められる。
