Ueda Ryuson

…English and French literature scholar, poet, and critic. He used the pen name Yanagimura in his early days. Born in Tsukiji, Tokyo, as the son of a former Shogunate official. After attending First Higher School, he graduated from the Department of English Literature at the University of Tokyo. He served as a professor at the Tokyo Higher Normal School, a lecturer at the University of Tokyo, and a professor at Kyoto University. While attending First Higher School, he became a member of the Bungakukai (literature world) along with Shimazaki Toson and others, and after entering the University of Tokyo, he participated in the founding of Teikoku Bungaku (imperial literature) and became a member of the editorial committee for the first period. He serialized articles introducing the literary trends of European countries in the magazine, and published a critical biography of Jesus (1899), a collection of translations of Mi wo Tsukushi, and collections of critiques such as Recent Foreign Literature, Literary Essays, and The Saint Poet Dante (all 1901), bringing new knowledge to the literary world. …
