The English Separatist Puritans came to New England on the Mayflower in 1620 in search of religious freedom and founded the Plymouth Colony. In a broad sense, the term refers to all 102 immigrants, most of whom were farmers from the small village of Scrooby in Nottinghamshire. They developed their faith under the guidance of local notable William Brewster and pastor John Robinson, and decided to seek exile in the Netherlands due to persecution. After settling in Leiden, the Netherlands for 10 years, they struggled to make ends meet and worried about their children's education, so they decided to emigrate to America, and received funding and permission to settle with the help of a London merchant.
