Cherimoya (English spelling) Annona cherimola; cherimoya
An evergreen tall tree of the Annonaceae family. A tropical fruit tree native to Peru and Ecuador, it is semi-wild in Central America and Mexico. It was introduced to Europe in the early 18th century. The leaves are alternate, ovate or elliptical, dark green with coarse hairs on the upper side and villus on the lower side. The flowers are axillary and opposite the leaves. The fruit is about the size of a fist, has no fixed shape (globular, heart-shaped, ovate, etc.), green at first, but turns gray when ripe. The flesh is white and ice cream-like, has a strong fragrance, and is sweet with high sugar and protein content. It is counted as one of the three most beautiful fruits in the world, along with pineapple and mangosteen. It is eaten as a fruit and is also used for medicinal purposes. The genus name is derived from the language of the indigenous people of Haiti. A. reticulata; custard apple, a closely related plant, is also cultivated as a fruit tree.
