A 12-syllable line, this has been the standard form of French poetry since the 16th century. Its name comes from the Romance of Alexander (late 12th century), which sings of the military exploits of Alexander the Great. In English poetry, it is in the iambic style, and is effectively used, for example, as the closing line of a Spenserian stanza.
