Mount Norikura - Mount Norikura

Japanese:
Mount Norikura - Mount Norikura

It is the southernmost mountain in the Northern Alps, located on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures. It is the collective name for the mountains that run from north to south, including Onyu-dake, Eboshi-dake, Ebisu-dake, Fujimi-dake, the highest peak Kengamine (3,026 meters), and Marishiten-dake, and is a cone-shaped stratovolcano as a whole. The mountain's name is said to have been given to it because of its gentle slope, resembling a horse's saddle. At the summit are crater lakes such as Gongen-ike and Tsuruga-ike, and volcanic dam lakes such as Gono-ike and Kame-ike. Volcanic activity begins at Onyu-dake and moves southward, with Ichinoike volcano, which creates Kengamine, having erupted lava seven times. From the Gifu side, the Norikura Skyline runs from Hirayu Pass to Tatamidaira (2,700 meters), just below Mount Ebisu. On the Nagano side, there is the Echo Line (Prefectural Route 84), which runs from Norikura Plateau to Tatamidaira via Kuraigahara. Both routes are closed to private vehicles due to restrictions on private vehicles. At the summit of Mount Marishiten, there are academic facilities such as the Norikura Observatory of the National Institute of Natural Sciences. Mount Norikura has been the subject of mountain worship since the Heian period, and was a training ground for mountain ascetics. Mount Norikura is also known as Kuraiyama, which probably comes from the rock seat where the gods reside. On Kengamine, Norikura Gongen is located on the Nagano side, and Mitake Shrine is located on the Gifu side. From the Matsumoto Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, take National Route 158 and Prefectural Route 84 to Norikura Plateau in about 60 minutes. It takes about 50 minutes by shuttle bus from Norikura Kogen Tourist Center to Tatamidaira.
