1739‐1803 A French literary figure, considered a pioneer in literary criticism and literary history. His real name was Jean François Del(a)harpe. He also wrote poetry and plays, but none of his works were particularly noteworthy. From 1786 he gave lectures on literature at a type of free school called a lycée, and was highly acclaimed. In his 12 volumes of Lectures on Literature (1799-1805), he introduced ancient and modern literature. Taking classicism as the standard of judgment, he paved the way for modern criticism with his vast knowledge and relatively flexible discerning eye.
