A French literary figure, considered a pioneer in literary criticism and literary history. His real name was Jean François Del(a)harpe. He also wrote poetry and plays, but none of his works were particularly noteworthy. From 1786 he gave lectures on literature at a type of free school called a lycée, and was highly acclaimed. In his 12 volumes of Lectures on Literature (1799-1805), he introduced ancient and modern literature. Taking classicism as the standard of judgment, he paved the way for modern criticism with his vast knowledge and relatively flexible discerning eye. [Fukui Yoshio]

フランスの文学者。文学批評および文学史の草分けとされる。本名Jean François Del(a)harpe。詩作，劇作も手がけたが，特記するほどの作品はない。1786年からリセと呼ぶ一種の自由学校で文学講義を行い，評判をとった。その《文学講義》12巻(1799‐1805)で，古代文学，近代文学を紹介する。判断の基準として古典主義をとり，博識と比較的柔軟な鑑識眼で近代批評に道を開いた。【福井芳男】
