Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon
An extinct volcano on the border between Kenya and Uganda. It is 4,321 meters above sea level. It was active in connection with the formation of the Eastern Rift Valley, which runs north and south through Kenya (the Great Rift Valley). At the summit is a nearly circular crater about 8 km in diameter. There is no glacier on the summit because it does not reach the snow line, but glacial landforms such as moraines indicate that there was a glacier above an altitude of about 3,400 m during the ice age. Even today, snow can be seen for a short period from the end of April to May. It is said that the first Westerner to see this mountain was H. Stanley (1875).
