A fairly large venomous snake of the Elapidae family in the order Lacertilia. It can reach a total length of 2.5 m. Its body color varies greatly, but is generally light brown or blackish brown with a vague, pale, thin, circular pattern. When excited, it raises the front of its body, spreads its neck and flattens it, which is why it is also called the Formosan cobra, as a pattern resembling glasses appears on the back of its body. It is violent and aggressive, and has a strong neurotoxin. It is widely distributed from Taiwan, the Philippines, southern China to South Asia. It is divided into several local types, and those found in Taiwan and other places are called the Formosan cobra.

トカゲ目コブラ科。全長 2.5mに達するかなり大型の毒ヘビ。体色は変異が大きいが，一般に淡褐色ないし黒褐色で，ぼんやりした淡色の細い環状模様がある。興奮して体の前部を起し，頸部を広げて平たくすると，その背面に眼鏡状の模様が現れるので，メガネヘビとも呼ばれている。性質は荒く，攻撃的で，強い神経毒をもつ。台湾，フィリピン，中国南部から南アジアにかけて広く分布する。いくつかの地方型に分けられ，台湾などに産するものはタイワンコブラと呼ばれる。
