A type of kariginu (hunting clothes) worn by lower-ranking samurai. It was made of white cloth, so it was also written as "shirobari." It was also worn by people without rank or position who were assigned to various government offices, shrines, and stations under the Ritsuryo system and performed miscellaneous tasks, as well as by servants such as umbrella bearers, shoe bearers, and mouth bearers of various households, and so they were also called "hakucho" (white samurai). From hakucho, one could only advance to the rank of chief priest. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
