An enlightened politician in the late Joseon Dynasty of Korea. His Japanese name is Yu Kishun. His pen name was Kokudang. He studied under Park Gye-su and was devoted to enlightened thought, studying in Japan and the United States. He returned to Korea in 1885, but was imprisoned as a member of the enlightened movement. During this time, he wrote "The Travels to the West," an introduction to Western affairs based on his experience studying abroad. During the Gabo Reforms (1894), he was a central figure in the Kim Hong-jip cabinet and worked hard for the reforms. When the Kim Hong-jip cabinet collapsed with Gojong's escape to the Russian embassy in 1896, he went into exile in Japan, and after returning to Korea in 1907, he launched a patriotic enlightenment movement outside of the government through the Heungsadan and Hanseong Buminhwae. He was awarded a baronial title when Korea was annexed by Japan in 1910, but declined. A politician who was frustrated by his ideal of enlightening Korea. <Works> "Yu Gil-jun Complete Works" <References> "The Reform Thoughts of Modern Korea" by Kang Jae-eun
