Tobun Fujimoto

Japanese: 藤本斗文 - ふじもととぶん
Tobun Fujimoto

Date of birth and death unknown. Kabuki playwright. As a disciple of the famous actor Sawamura Sojuro I, he worked at the Nakamuraza in Edo under the name Sawamura Tobun. In 1737 (Genbun 2), he changed his surname to Fujimoto. He took up writing for Ichikawa Danjuro II, established himself as a playwright, and completed the script for "Sukeroku." In 1752 (Horeki 2), he wrote "Akazawayama Sumo Nikki," a kyogen play about the sumo wrestling of Otani Hiroji and Nakamura Sukegoro, who were all the rage at the time. However, it seems that he had trouble with an actor around this time, and began writing kyogen under the name of his student Sawai Chuzo. He retired from the theater world at the end of the Horeki era (1751-64), and disappeared at the end of the Meiwa era (1764-72). The script for the play "Otokodate Hatsukai Soga" has been passed down to this day. Other works that remain include Tomimoto's "Imosedori Meisho no Yuugure."
