...A town in Ashigarashimo County, in the southwestern tip of Kanagawa Prefecture. Population 18,411 (1995). The town covers the area inside the outer rim of the ancient caldera of Mt. Hakone, and the entire area is included in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Mt. Hakone was a sacred place of mountain worship in ancient times, and it is said that Hakone Sansho Gongen was enshrined there in 757 (Tenpyo-hoji 1). In the Middle Ages, it flourished under the protection of the Kamakura Shogunate, and in the Edo period, Hakone Barrier was established, and the central settlement of Hakone developed as a post town, Motohakone as a temple town of Hakone Shrine, and Yumoto as a hot spring resort.
