Usui Road

...A town in Ashigarashimo County, in the southwestern tip of Kanagawa Prefecture. Population 18,411 (1995). The town covers the area inside the outer rim of the ancient caldera of Mt. Hakone, and the entire area is included in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Mt. Hakone was a sacred place of mountain worship in ancient times, and it is said that Hakone Sansho Gongen was enshrined there in 757 (Tenpyo-hoji 1). In the Middle Ages, it flourished under the protection of the Kamakura Shogunate, and in the Edo period, Hakone Barrier was established, and the central settlement of Hakone developed as a post town, Motohakone as a temple town of Hakone Shrine, and Yumoto as a hot spring resort. In 1888, the Odawara Horse-drawn Railway was opened, and in 1900, the Odawara Electric Railway (later the Hakone Tozan Railway) was established as a tramway, and the town developed into a modern tourist resort. ...

…神奈川県南西端，足柄下郡の町。人口1万8411(1995)。箱根山古期カルデラの外輪山内側一帯を町域とし，全域が富士箱根伊豆国立公園に含まれる。古代の箱根山は山岳信仰の聖地で，757年(天平宝字1)には箱根三所権現がまつられたと伝えられる。中世には鎌倉幕府の庇護のもとに栄え，江戸時代に入ると箱根関が置かれ，中心集落の箱根は宿場町として，元箱根は箱根神社の門前町として，湯本は湯治場として発展した。1888年に小田原馬車鉄道が開通し，ついで1900年には小田原電気鉄道(のちの箱根登山鉄道)の路面電車に発展するに及び，近代的な観光保養地として発展を遂げた。…
