Inawashiro Kensai

A renga master from the Muromachi period. His first name was Muneharu. He was the son of Inawashiro Morizane of Aizu in Oshu. When he was around 20 years old, he received renga instruction from Shinkei, who was exiled in the Kanto region during the Onin War, and also had an exchange with Iio Sogi. After the war, he went to Kyoto and became active as a renga master, and in 1489 he was appointed as the magistrate of the Kitano Renga Kaisho, the highest honor in the renga world. In 1495, he assisted the editor Sogi in the editing of the Shinsen [G7EDFKunami/Tsukuba] Shu, but a feud arose over a haiku by Hosokawa Nariyuki. He also traveled to Yamaguchi, Awa, Hokuriku, and Kanto, and in 1501, he went down to Kanto, and continued his activities of renga and classical lectures in Iwaki, Aizu, Koga, and other places, before passing away in Koga. His haiku collection includes "Sonojin" (Sodenjin), his renga treatises include "Shinkei Sozu Teikun", "Renga Entokusho" (Renga Entokusho), and "Kanezai Zattan" (Kanezai Zatsudan), and his solo recitation "Seibyohoraku Senku" (Seibyo Horaku Senku) is also famous. He was a man of strong will and who followed his own path, as seen in his own praise of his own poem "Hanazochirukara tote no irokousakana" ("The colours of flowers are so beautiful, the fragrance of flowers is so sweet"), saying, "There was an imperial decree that this verse was the first in the Shin Kuwashu collection." <References> Kaneko Kinjiro, "A Study of the Renga Master Kanezai"

室町時代の連歌師。初名宗春。奥州会津の猪苗代盛実の子。20歳前後のころ,応仁の乱で関東流寓中の心敬に連歌の指導を受け,飯尾宗祇とも交流を持った。乱後京都に出て連歌師として活躍,延徳1(1489)年には早くも連歌界で最高の名誉職である北野連歌会所奉行に任ぜられた。明応4(1495)年『新撰【G7EDF玖波/つくば】集』編集では編者の宗祇を補佐したが,細川成之の句をめぐって確執が生じた。また山口,阿波,北陸,関東を旅し,文亀1(1501)年関東下向,以後岩城,会津,古河などで連歌や古典講義の活動を続け,古河の地に没した。句集に『園塵』,連歌論に『心敬僧都庭訓』『連歌延徳抄』『兼載雑談』などがあり,独吟の『聖廟法楽千句』も名高い。「はなぞちるかからむとての色香かな」の自詠を,「此発句,新G7EDF玖波集に第一の発句なりと勅定ありし」と自賛するように,芯の強い独自の道を行く人であった。<参考文献>金子金治郎『連歌師兼載伝考』
