Insei period - Insei jidai

Japanese: 院政時代 - いんせいじだい

One of the periods in Japanese history. It mainly covers the 100 years from 1086 to 1192, when the three retired emperors Shirakawa, Toba, and Goshirakawa ruled as cloistered emperors, but if we consider it to be the period between the period when the Fujiwara clan held power as regents and the period when the Kamakura shogunate became a government superior to the imperial court, it covers the 150 years from 1068 , when Emperor Gosanjo ascended to the throne, to 1221 , when the Jokyu War occurred and Emperor Gotoba abdicated.

日本史上の時代区分の一つ。白河、鳥羽、後白河上皇三代の院政が行なわれた時代の応徳三年（一〇八六）から建久三年（一一九二）までの約一〇〇年間が中心となるが、藤原氏が摂関として政権を取った時代と、鎌倉幕府が朝廷に優越する政権となった時代との中間の時代と考えれば、後三条天皇即位の治暦四年（一〇六八）から後鳥羽上皇の退位した承久の乱の承久三年（一二二一）までの約一五〇年間がこれに当たる。
