Protestant theologian and philosopher. Born in northern Germany, after completing his studies he served as a chaplain in World War I. In 1919 he taught at universities in Berlin, Marburg, Frankfurt, and other cities, but was dismissed by the Nazis as a leader of the religious socialist movement, and in 1933 he moved to the United States. In the latter half of his life he was mainly active in the United States, as a professor at Union Theological Seminary, Harvard, and the University of Chicago. The central theme of his thought was to reinterpret Christian revelation (the gospel) in relation to the modern situation. He called this position an "answering theology" based on the "method of correlation," and distinguished it from the dialectical theology of K. Barth and others. In this position, not only philosophy but also literature, art, education, society, politics, and almost all culture in general have religious meaning. From this perspective, he showed deep insight into the problems of humanity in modern society, and had a great influence. He has written many books, including the three volumes of "Systematic Theology."
