Born: February 16, 1831, Oryol Died March 5, 1895. Petersburg. Russian novelist. Born the son of a civil servant, he spent his childhood in a monastery. Later, he traveled around Russia, changing jobs frequently. He began writing in the early 1860s, and was labeled a reactionary for his long novels such as Nekuda (1864), which mocked the revolutionary intellectuals of the time. His talent as a realist is fully displayed in his middle and later works, such as Ocharovannyi strannik (73), which vividly depicts the misfortunes of a talented serf and the lives of Separatists, Tupeinyi khudozhnik (83), and The Monastery People.
