It is also written as katsuo-ki, katsuo-ki, katsuo-ki, etc. It is a type of ridge ornament that is widely used on the ridge of the main hall of shrine architecture. It is made by lining up thick logs on top of the ridge at right angles to the ridge. It is thought that its original purpose was to connect the ridge to the structure to prevent the thatched roof from being blown away by the wind, but later it came to be used as a symbol of the shrine's status and authority.
