1843‐1918 French engineer. He established the foundations of power transmission and distribution technology, including long-distance transmission and parallel AC distribution systems. He studied at the École supérieure des Mines. He joined the Northern Railway, Chemin de Fer du Nord, where he developed instruments for steam locomotives. He also had an interest in electricity, and in 1878 he invented the galvanometer, which was improved on by JA d'Arsonval in 1882 and came into widespread use.
