...In the early modern period, the roads from Toranomon to Mita and Shinagawa-juku were turned into towns early on, and Iikura 1-6-chome, Mamiana-cho, Kata-cho, and Nagasaka-cho came under the control of the town magistrate in 1662 (Kanbun 2), and the surrounding areas became temple and shrine sites and samurai estates. The border between Iikura 2-3-chome was called Yotsutsuji, and a grass market was held there every year on July 12th. The area next to Akabane Bridge, which continues to Iikura 5-chome, was commonly called Akabane Choro-gashi, because fish merchants would set up their shops there every morning.
