Tsuma [village] - Tsuma

Japanese: 都万[村] - つま

The village occupies the southwestern part of Dogo Island in the Oki Islands, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture. Population 2,122 (1995). The village is surrounded by steep mountain ranges, with Mt. Yokoo (577m) in the north as its main peak, and most of the village area occupies the southwest slopes. The coastline is winding and includes the ports of Tsuma and Tsudo. Both agriculture, forestry and fishing are small-scale, with many people leaving the village or working away from home. The village raises beef cattle, and is working to increase the number of cattle through grassland improvement projects. Fishing has long involved squid fishing and line-fishing for sea bream, but in recent years efforts have been focused on promoting aquaculture, particularly the cultivation of scallops.

島根県隠岐（おき）郡，隠岐諸島島後（どうご）の南西部を占める村。人口2122(1995)。北部の横尾山(577m)を主峰とする急峻な山地が連なり，村域の大部分はその南西斜面を占める。海岸線は屈曲が多く，都万港や津戸港がある。農林業も漁業もともに零細で，離村者や出稼ぎが多い。肉牛を飼育し，草地改良事業により頭数の増加に取り組んでいる。漁業は古くからイカ釣りやタイの一本釣りが行われてきたが，近年は養殖漁業の振興，特にヒオウギガイの養殖に力を入れている。
