The Canadian Shield, which covers a vast area of ​​4.8 million km2, is made up of the Slave Province, Superior Province, which were affected by the Kenolan Orogeny, the Bear Province, Churchill Province, and Southern Province of the Hudson Orogeny, and the Grenville Province of the Grenville Orogeny. The Gunflint Formation (1.9 billion years ago), famous for the Gunflint Biota of the Early Proterozoic Era, is distributed on the north shore of Lake Superior. The Gunflint Formation, which is about 150 m thick, consists of a thick layer of iron ore sandwiched between a lower layer of pebble and an upper layer of limestone.
