A city in northern Nigeria in West Africa. Population 202,000 (1995). Located in the center of the long border with the Republic of Niger to the north, it has close ties with the Nigerien city of Maradi. It is a distribution center for agricultural products in northern Nigeria, producing millet, groundnuts, cotton, leather, and other products, and is a commercial city in the savannah, with leather products being its specialty. It belongs to the so-called Hausaland (the world of the Hausa people), and from the 17th to 18th centuries it was the largest of the seven Hausa city-states that existed in this savannah region. 西アフリカのナイジェリア北部の都市。人口20万2000(1995)。北方のニジェール共和国との長い国境線の中央部に接し,ニジェールの町マラディと関係が深い。北部ナイジェリアの農業生産物の集散地で,雑穀,落花生,綿,皮革などを産出し,皮革製品を特産とするサバンナの商業都市である。いわゆるハウサランド(ハウサ族の世界)に属し,17世紀から18世紀にかけては,このサバンナ地帯に存在した七つのハウサ族の都市国家のうち最大であった。
