Oriental art historian. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture. Graduated from the sculpture department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1893 (Meiji 26). He switched to specializing in Oriental art history and became a professor at his alma mater in 1896. He also founded the Shinbi Shoin School with Tajima Shiichi, and worked to publish illustrated catalogs such as "A View of Oriental Art" and "A View of True Beauty." He received the Imperial Academy Prize for "A History of Mikkyo Hattatsushi," and was active as a pioneer in the study of Japanese art history throughout the Meiji and Taisho periods.
