In a conic section, a sphere can be created that is tangent to a point F on the plane containing the curve and along a circle on the conic surface. The line of intersection between the plane containing the curve and the plane containing the circle is called the directrix. Point F is the focus. An ellipse and a hyperbola each have two directrixes, and the equations of the standard form of the directrix in Cartesian coordinates are x = a / e and x = -a / e ( e is the eccentricity). A parabola has one directrix, and the coordinates of the focus are ( p , 0).
