Tsurugi Mountains - Tsurugi-sanchi

Japanese: 剣山地 - つるぎさんち

A mountain range that stretches from the western part of Tokushima Prefecture to the eastern part of Kochi Prefecture. It occupies the eastern half of the Shikoku Mountains, and is opposite the Ishizuchi Mountains in the western half. The main peak, Mt. Tsurugi (1,955m), is in the center, and from the northeast to the southwest, there are Ichinomori (1,879m), Takanose (1,741m), Mitsumine (1,894m), and others. The mountain range is mainly composed of limestone belonging to the Chichibu Palaeozoic Formation, and in parts of the northern part, Mikabu metamorphic rocks are also found. It is the source of many rivers and carves deep valleys. Mountain villages are scattered throughout the mountainside. Iya in particular is isolated by an eroded valley of the Iya River and is known as a hidden region. The southern foot of the mountain is Chubu Yamakei Prefectural Natural Park. Together with Oboke, Koboke, and Iya Valley, it is the center of Mt. Tsurugi Quasi-National Park.

徳島県西部から高知県東部にまたがる山地。四国山地の東半を占め，西半の石鎚山脈に対する。主峰剣山 (1955m) を中心に，北東から南西に一ノ森 (1879m) ，高ノ瀬 (1741m) ，三嶺 (1894m) などが連なる。山地はおもに秩父古生層に属する石灰岩からなり，北部の一部では御荷鉾変成岩もみられる。多くの河川の水源となり深い谷を刻む。山腹の各所に山村が点在する。特に祖谷は祖谷川の浸食谷によって隔絶され，秘境として知られた。南麓は中部山渓県立自然公園。大歩危・小歩危，祖谷渓とともに剣山国定公園の中心。
