Illustrated Book

In the broad sense, it refers to a book that is mainly composed of pictures or that is composed only of pictures, but this definition includes everything from old colored manuscripts to ukiyo-e books and new art books. In the UK and the US, the term picture book is merely a common usage, and the actual definition is illustrated book, which strictly means a book in which the illustrations express a unified theme.

[Up to the early modern period]
In Japan, they were commonly known as theater book illustration books from the Edo period, but generally illustrated books of popular literature, mainly aimed at women and children, were called ehon.
