Octogen - octogen

Common name for cyclo-1,3,5,7-tetramethylene-2,4,6,8-tetranitramine. A heat-resistant, high-velocity, high explosive, also known as HMX (short for high melting explosive). It is a colorless crystal with four crystal forms: α (alpha), β (beta), γ (gamma), and δ (delta). The β form is stable and relatively insensitive to shock, so it is used as the main component of high-heat-resistant explosives. Its detonation velocity is 9,100 meters per second at a specific gravity of 1.84, the highest among practical explosives. Explosives based on octogen include LX-04, LX-09, LX-14, Octol, and PBX-9501. It is also being researched as an additive for propellants and composite propellants (propellants made by mixing and hardening an oxidizer and a fuel/binder).

シクロテトラメチレンテトラニトラミンcyclo-1,3,5,7-tetramethylene-2,4,6,8-tetranitramineの慣用名。耐熱・高爆速・高性能爆薬で、HMX（high melting explosiveの略）の別名でもよばれる。無色の結晶で、α(アルファ)、β(ベータ)、γ(ガンマ)、δ(デルタ)の4種の結晶形があるが、β形が安定で衝撃に対しても比較的鈍感なので、これが高性能耐熱爆薬の主成分として用いられる。爆速は比重1.84のとき毎秒9100メートルで、実用爆薬中最高である。オクトーゲンを主成分とした爆薬にはLX-04、LX-09、LX-14やオクトール、PBX-9501などがある。また、発射薬やコンポジット推進薬（酸化剤と燃料兼バインダー＝粘結剤を混合・硬化させた推進薬）の添加剤としても研究されている。
