Common name for cyclo-1,3,5,7-tetramethylene-2,4,6,8-tetranitramine. A heat-resistant, high-velocity, high explosive, also known as HMX (short for high melting explosive). It is a colorless crystal with four crystal forms: α (alpha), β (beta), γ (gamma), and δ (delta). The β form is stable and relatively insensitive to shock, so it is used as the main component of high-heat-resistant explosives. Its detonation velocity is 9,100 meters per second at a specific gravity of 1.84, the highest among practical explosives. Explosives based on octogen include LX-04, LX-09, LX-14, Octol, and PBX-9501. It is also being researched as an additive for propellants and composite propellants (propellants made by mixing and hardening an oxidizer and a fuel/binder). 耐熱・高爆速・高性能爆薬で、HMX(high melting explosiveの略)の別名でもよばれる。
