Jesuit priest, apostate. Born in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. In Japanese records, he is listed as Joseph Couro. He left Manila as part of a group of 10 people led by Pedro Marquez, and in 1643, he infiltrated Oshima in Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture), where he was immediately captured. He passed through Nagasaki and was taken into custody in the Christian house of the Buddhist sect magistrate Inoue Masashige in Kohinata, Edo, where he was tortured and all of them renounced their faith. He was forced to marry a Japanese woman and changed his name to Okamoto San'emon. He was imprisoned in the Christian house for 42 years, during which time he received a stipend of 10 people and cooperated with the Buddhist sect magistrate's crackdown. He was buried at Koishikawa Muryō-in Temple. His posthumous name was Nyusen Jōshin-kōji. イエズス会司祭,背教者。イタリア,シチリア島パレルモ生まれ。日本の記録にジョセイフ・コウロとある。ペドロ・マルケスを団長とする一行10名に加わり,マニラを出航し,寛永20(1643)年,筑前国(福岡県)大島に潜入するや直ちに捕らえられ,長崎を経て,江戸小日向にある宗門奉行井上政重の切支丹屋敷内に預けられ,拷問を受け全員棄教。日本人女性との結婚を強制され,名前も岡本三右衛門と改めた。切支丹屋敷に42年間幽閉され,この間,10人扶持を受け,宗門奉行の取り締まりに協力した。小石川無量院に葬られる。戒名は入専浄真居士。昭和52(1977)年,小石川伝通院に供養碑が建てられた。<参考文献>姉崎正治『切支丹伝道の興廃』
