Year of death: 25th July, 1685 (24th August, 1685) Year of birth: 1602 Jesuit priest, apostate. Born in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. In Japanese records, he is listed as Joseph Couro. He left Manila as part of a group of 10 people led by Pedro Marquez, and in 1643, he infiltrated Oshima in Chikuzen Province (Fukuoka Prefecture), where he was immediately captured. He passed through Nagasaki and was taken into custody in the Christian house of the Buddhist sect magistrate Inoue Masashige in Kohinata, Edo, where he was tortured and all of them renounced their faith. He was forced to marry a Japanese woman and changed his name to Okamoto San'emon. He was imprisoned in the Christian house for 42 years, during which time he received a stipend of 10 people and cooperated with the Buddhist sect magistrate's crackdown. He was buried at Koishikawa Muryō-in Temple. His posthumous name was Nyusen Jōshin-kōji.
