Azumayasan - Azumayasan

Japanese: 四阿山 - あずまやさん
Azumayasan - Azumayasan

A cone-shaped volcano towering over the border between Gunma and Nagano prefectures. It is also called Mount Azuma. It is 2,354 meters above sea level. It is said that this name came from the shape of the mountain, which resembles a roof. As it has a good view, two shrines dedicated to the border deity are enshrined on the summit. The border between Joshu Shrine, which faces east, and Shinshu Shrine, which faces west, is located in the center, north-south, on the border between Joshu and Shinshu. The mountain is mainly andesite, with a wide base. The southeastern foot of the mountain is part of the cabbage cultivation area of Tsumagoi Village, the western foot is the highland vegetable cultivation area of Sugadaira in Shinshu, and Torii Pass is located on the southern foot. The mountain ridge continuing to the south is also home to Matoiwa, a national natural monument. It is a three-hour walk from Torii Pass.
