Shunsaku Iwashita

Japanese: 岩下俊作 - いわしたしゅんさく

1906-1980 A novelist from the Showa period.
Born November 16, 1906. He wrote poetry while working at the Yahata Steel Works. In 1939, his novel "The Legend of Tomishima Matsugoro," published in Kyushu Bungaku, was nominated for the Naoki Prize, and was later renamed "The Life of Muhomatsu," and was made into a film many times, and also performed on stage. He passed away on January 30, 1980, at the age of 73. He was from Fukuoka Prefecture and graduated from Kokura Technical School. His real name was Hatta Hideyoshi. His other works include "Flame and Ice."

明治39年11月16日生まれ。八幡(やはた)製鉄所につとめるかたわら詩をかく。昭和14年「九州文学」に発表した小説「富島松五郎伝」が直木賞候補となり,のち「無法松の一生」と改題されてたびたび映画化され,また舞台で上演された。昭和55年1月30日死去。73歳。福岡県出身。小倉工業卒。本名は八田秀吉。作品はほかに「焔(ほのお)と氷」など。
