Matsu Kanshi

Year of birth: Unknown. A Joruri playwright from the mid-Edo period, owner of the teahouse Kikuya at Edo Ichimura-za. Commonly known as Yorozuya Kichiemon. He was active as a playwright at Edo Hizen-za and Gaiki-za during the An'ei and Tenmei periods (1772-1789). He is a representative Edo playwright alongside Kijo Taro and Fukuuchi Onigai (Hiraga Gennai). He left his signature on many of his originals, but the most famous are "Koi Musume Mukashi Hachijo," which premiered in 1775 (An'ei 4), and "Kara Sendaihagi," a Joruri adaptation of Kabuki that premiered in 1785 (Tenmei 5). It is said that many of his works are typical works that depend on previous works. There is an original work published in 1802 (Kyowa 2) that is signed "2nd generation," but his birth and death years are unknown. <References> "Gidayu Nenpyo/Kinsei Hen 1"

江戸中期の浄瑠璃作者,江戸市村座の芝居茶屋菊屋の主人。通称万屋吉右衛門。安永・天明期(1772～1789)に江戸肥前座,外記座の作者として活躍した。紀上太郎,福内鬼外(平賀源内)に並ぶ江戸の代表的作者である。多くの正本に署名を残したが,なかでも安永4(1775)年初演の「恋娘昔八丈」や,歌舞伎を浄瑠璃化した天明5(1785)年初演の「伽羅先代萩」が著名。先行作に依存した類型的作品が多いといわれている。なお2代目という署名の入った享和2(1802)年刊の正本が存在するが,生没年不詳。<参考文献>『義太夫年表/近世篇1』
