What is a story?
Narratives are generally considered to be the basic element of literature. A story is said to exist when a certain character performs some action and some plot development occurs; on the other hand, a static description of scenery is not considered to be a narrative. Narratives in this sense are found in many so-called heroic epics and ballads. Their characteristic is that the work has a complete beginning, middle, and end, with the actions of a central character at its center.

...Although there will be a lack of uniformity, this is unavoidable since the names and classifications of literary genres are inevitably regional. In any case, story is the higher concept, and therefore the conventional approach of equating story with narrative literature is an unfair oversimplification (if we were to translate this into Western languages, perhaps story would be closer to narrative or récit, and narrative literature to romance or roman).
