[Confrontation with the Ottoman Empire]
A new threat appeared for the Principality of Wallachia shortly after its founding: the invasion of the Ottoman Empire, which had taken control of Bulgaria in 1393 and was trying to extend its influence further north. Princes who fought to protect the independence of the principality during this period were Mircea the Elder (reigned 1386-1418) and Vlad the Impaler (reigned 1448,56-62,76). Mircea the Elder allied with Hungary and fought against the Ottoman army, repeatedly defeating them, but in 1415, for the first time, he agreed to pay a tribute of 3,000 ducats (gold coins) to the Sultan in exchange for maintaining his independence.
