Enoch Arden

…His next work, Maude (1855), was an ambitious work that the poet called a “lyric monodrama,” but it was not as well received as his previous work. After this, he completed Enoch Arden (1864), a poem about a tragic love in a seaside town, and Idylls of the King (1859-89), a long poem that weaves Arthurian legend with the current trends of the time. He became more and more absorbed in the conflict between faith and doubt, hope and disappointment, and continued to explore the meaning of death and the immortality of the soul. “Beyond the Sand Bar” in Demeter and Other Poems (1889) can be said to be a farewell song to the poet’s return to the vast and infinite ocean. …
