Cistus (English name) white-leaf rockrose

Japanese: キスツス（英語表記）white‐leaf rockrose

It is an evergreen shrub of the Cistaceae family, growing to a height of about 1m. The leaves are elliptical or egg-elliptical, about 5cm long, with a velvety surface and a grayish-white color. The leaf edges roll under, and three veins can be seen on the surface. It flowers from May to July. The flowers are pale purple or pale pink, large and about 5cm in diameter, with five elegant, slightly wavy petals. The flowers fully open around noon and wilt in the evening, lasting only one day. The Japanese name Gojiaoi (midday holly) means noon in the past, that is, a flower similar to the mallow that blooms at noon today.

ハンニチバナ科の常緑小低木で高さ1mくらい。葉は楕円形または卵状楕円形で長さ5cmくらい，表面はビロード状をなし灰白色である。葉縁は下面へ巻き込み，表面には3本の葉脈が見られる。花期は5～7月。花は淡紫紅色または淡紅色で花径5cmくらいで大きく，花弁は5枚でわずかに波状を呈し優美である。花は，正午ころに全開して夕刻にはしぼみ，1日で終わる。和名のゴジアオイ(午時葵)は昔の午時，すなわち今の正午の時刻に咲くアオイに似た花の意味。
