Fall line cities. Cities that developed along a fall line. In the Appalachian Mountains in the United States, many waterfalls are distributed in a line on the eastern slope, and many cities developed due to the location of industries such as textiles and flour milling that depended on the water power that took advantage of the difference in height, and the end point of river traffic. Many large metropolitan groups, such as Paterson, Trenton, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington DC, have their origins in these fall line cities.
