1769‐1849 Governor of Egypt; founder of the Muhammad Ali dynasty. Reigned 1805-48. Born in the city of Kawara in Macedonia. His origins are unclear, but he is said to have been of Albanian descent. He was sent to Egypt by the Ottoman Empire as an Albanian mercenary officer during Napoleon's occupation of Egypt in 1801. He rose to prominence in the political turmoil following Napoleon's retreat, and in 1805, with the support of the ulama and the people of Cairo, he was appointed governor (wali), and the Ottoman Empire confirmed him.
