Muḥammad 'Ali

Governor of Egypt; founder of the Muhammad Ali dynasty. Reigned 1805-48. Born in the city of Kawara in Macedonia. His origins are unclear, but he is said to have been of Albanian descent. He was sent to Egypt by the Ottoman Empire as an Albanian mercenary officer during Napoleon's occupation of Egypt in 1801. He rose to prominence in the political turmoil following Napoleon's retreat, and in 1805, with the support of the ulama and the people of Cairo, he was appointed governor (wali), and the Ottoman Empire confirmed him.

エジプト総督，ムハンマド･アリー朝の創立者。在位1805‐48年。マケドニア地方の都市カワーラに生まれた。出自は定かではないが，アルバニア系といわれる。1801年ナポレオンのエジプト占領時に，オスマン帝国によってアルバニア人傭兵隊将校としてエジプトに派遣された。ナポレオン退却後の政局混乱に乗じて頭角を現し，05年ウラマー，カイロ市民の支持を背景に総督(ワーリー)に任命され，オスマン帝国もこれを追認した。
